Octavo, softbound (slick, photo. illus. wrapper), 128 pp. Fine. From lower cover: Banking in the sparsely settled, frontier Florida of the nineteenth century was not for the timid or the easily discouraged. Being neither of these, the indomitable William Boyd Barnett opened a private bank in Jacksonville in 1877 that would later bear his name. Barnett and his two sons built a successful family business, and by the early 1880s, their bank had become the largest in Florida. During the next several decades, the bank played a part in a number of historically significant events, from the financing of the Disston land purchase that solidified the state's finances in the 1880s to the rebuilding of Jacksonville after the destructive 1901 fire. Over the course of its 120 year history, Barnett maintained a significant presence in Florida's economic development and in the evolution of the American banking industry. The Barnett name became synonymous with sound, conservative, well-managed banking, ad at the time of its sale in 1998, Barnett was the oldest and largest banking organization in Florida. The story of this company, however, is more than just a series of strong leaders or the annual recap of asset growth and profitability. It is the story of the thousands of people, both employees and customers, who played a vital part in the bank's success. Showcasing vintage photographs and s detailed historical narrative, Barnett Bank provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of this institution, which became, in the words of one of its successful marketing campaign's, "Florida's Bank." Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xv, 172 pp. Fine (New) in Fine (New) dust jacket. From dust jacket: In 2905, Sam Stein, a young Jewish immigrant from Russia, arrived in New York with $43 in his pocket and dreams of building a better life. Sam (whose photo is on the cover) soon drifted west to Memphis, and then down the Mississippi River to Greenville, Mississippi. He became a peddler, carrying a heavy sack of cheap household goods to poor, rural homes throughout the Delta. Within a few years, he opened a small store in Greenville. From that humble beginning almost a century ago, has grown a national retail merchandising chain with more than 260 stores from coast-to-coast. The history of Stein Mart is the story of a remarkable family. Sam Stein built a successful business selling work clothes and inexpensive merchandise to workers in town and to tenants and sharecroppers on the large farms surrounding Greenville. His four children continued the business, which eventually split into two stores, Sam Stein's and Stein's Self Service Store. Sam's oldest son, Jake, had dreams of building something bigger and better. He expanded the Self Service Store to a whole city block. With a flair for merchandising and a commitment to deeply discounted prices, he transformed his store, renamed Stein Mart, into a regional retailing success story.
