[Nature] ATTRACTIVE LEATHER-BOUND SET. Two volumes. Octavos (20 x 13cm), pp.viii; 368; pp.[2]; 344. With numerous tissue-guarded engraved plates and a non tissue-guarded frontispiece to either volume. Recently re-bound in brown half-calf, nonpareil marbled paper over boards. Gilt titles, blind decoration, and raised bands to spines. All edges marbled. Both interiors toned, sparsely foxed and spotted. Some paper restoration to title page of volume I. Very minor offsetting from engravings. Pencil annotation to a plate verso in volume 2. Edges rubbed and toned. Considerable rubbing to marbled paper, a bit of wear to binding extremities minus spine. Very good. Clergyman William Gilpin wrote dissertations on the English countryside which were part travel-book, part treatise on aesthetics. His guiding principle was the notion of the 'picturesque,' the idealistic beauty of nature only representable in painting. This is his comprehensive work on English forests.

Half-Calf. Condición: Fine. Beautifully bound Third Edition (first published 1818) of this popularization of Gilpin's first picturesque tour, introducing the picturesque to a whole new readership. Foolscap 8vo (170 x 99mm): vi,199,[1]pp, with engraved frontispiece (view of Symond's Yat, on the Wye). Contemporary green half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine in six compartments elaborately decorated in gilt, red morocco lettering piece gilt, marbled edges and end papers. Later book label of P. R. Glazebrook, presumably the author of Blackstone's Statutes On Criminal Law and other books. Dedicated to the engraver John Britton, who has "exhibited our richest remains of Antiquity in a superb style." An excellent example, tightly bound and clean throughout. In June of 1770, William Gilpin embarked on his first picturesque tour, creating an entirely new class of travel. "Sailing down the Wye proved a very different trip from [Gilpin's earlier] tame journey down the Thames: the ruined castles and mountains of Wales were indeed exciting after the flat countryside of eastern and south-eastern England. . . . here was landscape that called for description, that matched his conceptions of beauty and grandeur." (Barbier) Gilpin's Wye Tour disappeared from print after the fifth edition of 1800. It no longer met the needs of a new century, even after Gilpin experimented with an unillustrated pocket edition. Fosbroke abbreviated Gilpin's descriptions for a contemporary audience, and his book remained in print for twenty-three years. N. B. Quarter-Morocco. Condición: Near Fine. Early Reprint. Fourth Edition (so stated) of the first standard guide on print collecting in England, including detailed commentary on Hogarth's Rake's Progress. 8vo: xiii,[3],174,xi,[1]pp. Contemporary quarter black morocco over marbled boards, flat spine in six compartments between gilt rules, gilt urn stamped in each but second titled in gilt. An excellent copy, tightly bound and generally clean and bright with only the occasional minor smudge and handling mark and a few stray spots of foxing. Barbier, pp. 24-27. Lowndes II 895. First published anonymously in 1768 (Gilpin's authorship was only revealed with the third edition, in 1781). On the continent its influence spread through German, French and Dutch translations. Gilpin's "aim, as the title-page indicates, was to outline â the Principles of picturesque Beauty, the Different Kinds of Prints, and the Characters of the most noted Masters'. . . . The Essay defines â picturesque' as â a term expressive of that peculiar kind of beauty, which is agreeable in a picture', but does not develop the definition." (ODNB) Among prints singled out for detailed consideration are Salvator Rosa's "Death of Polycrates," Waterloo's "Tobias," and Hogarth's "Rake's Progress." The collector is "cautioned against indulging a desire of becoming possessed of all the works of any master. . . . against a superstitious veneration for names. . . . [against] making the public taste our standard. . . [against] rat[ing prints'] value by their scarceness. . . [against] buying copies for originals," and against acquiring poor impressions.N. B. 8vo., (8 4/8 x 5 4/8 inches). Half-title (title-page and first leaf of text loose, title-page with early repairs). 6 aquatint plates, including one with original hand-colour. Modern calf-backed, marbled paper boards. Provenance: modern ink library duplicate stamp on the verso of the title-page. First edition. "In 1768 Gilpin's "Essay on Prints" was published (anonymously) and received excellent reviews. His aim, as the title-page indicates, was to outline 'the Principles of picturesque Beauty, the Different Kinds of Prints, and the Characters of the most noted Masters'. The third edition in 1781 revealed the name of the author. The Essay defines 'picturesque' as 'a term expressive of that peculiar kind of beauty, which is agreeable in a picture' (Essay on Prints, 2), but does not develop the definition. That challenge was met in the series of books published between 1782 and 1809, all of which bore the same title format: Observations on [various regions of Britain] relative chiefly to picturesque beauty. He travelled widely in Britain, with his notebook and sketching materials, in order to identify locations which offered that particular kind of beauty in landscape 'which is agreeable in a picture'. Picturesque tourism constituted 'a new object of pursuit', as he wrote in the first of these books, Observations on the River Wye (1782): the practice recommended was 'that of not merely describing; but of adapting the description of natural scenery to the principles of artificial landscape' (Wye, 2). Further picturesque books, with aquatint reproductions of Gilpin's pen-and-wash drawings, included Observations on Cumberland and Westmorland (2 vols., 1786), the Scottish highlands (2 vols., 1789), south-west England and the Isle of Wight (1798), and the eastern counties of England and north Wales (1809). Remarks on Forest Scenery (1791), illustrated with etchings by his brother, Sawrey, concentrated on the New Forest, where he lived. Three Essays of a more analytical kind, on the nature of picturesque beauty, picturesque travel, and on the sketching of landscape, together with a poem on landscape painting, appeared in 1792. In 1804 Two Essays described his methods and principles in making his sketches" (Malcolm Andrews for DNB).
