Basel, Chr. von Mechel, Paris, D.-Ch. Buldet, 1764-1765. Fine etching of a shepherd and a boy playing flute seated on a rock next to a cave; resting sheep in the foreground. At bottom lettered "S. Gessner inv et fec." and "7". 19,8 x 18,2 cm.*Leemann-Van Elck, 267 No. 7. In database British Museum. Leaf 7 from a series of 10 leaves: " X. Paysages dédiés à mr. Watelet auteur du poème sur l'art de peindre"; "Folge der Landschaften in Waterloos Geschmack". Salomon Gessner was the first imaginative writer in the German language to achieve international fame, specializing in 'Idylls'; based in Zürich, he lived a life as idyllic as his texts and did much to popularise the idea that Switzerland was the natural home of a virtue and simplicity that had been lost elsewhere in Europe; as a painter and from 1752 etcher, he was specialized in pastoral landscapes. - Trimmed within plate-mark, but outside the small white border. A few tiny holes in upper and lower blank border; borders lightly soiled.[(5943)].
