Also includes poetry by Emerson (page 202), Longfellow (page 323), and Thoreau pages 145, 238). Includes articles on game birds of America, a tale about the Civil War, "Spectral and Supernatural Appearances" by R. Balmanno (page 361), A story called "The Slaver: A Tale of Our Own Times" by the son of the late Dr. John D. Godman, a story of the American Revolutionary War, many poems, a few songs, and much more. Both volumes are bound together in three-quarter brown leather with green and black marbled paper covered boards, titled in gilt on spine. Boards and spine are in one piece, but are detached from the textblock. Large chip to head of spine. Rubbing to boards and wear to spine end edges of boards. First signature is loose, but present. With 34 full page engravings including 8 French Fashion plates, six of which are hand colored. Four of the plates are by Karl Bodmer. Lacks fashion plate for December. Spots of foxing throughout and occasional spots of soiling. A good reading copy. Volume 30 is 380 pages; Volume 31 is 332 pages. PER/011824.
