Hardcover. Condición: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. PUBLISHER: Doubleday Doran DATE/EDITION: 1931, same dates with no added printings BINDING: Hardbound in black cloth spine and illustrated paper covered boards, 9" x 12", pages not numbered DUST JACKET: No jacket BOOK CONDITION: There is some damp spotting at upper left front corner that does not penetrate the inside. The rear cover has some large scuffs and there is some edge wear at the top rear cover and a few of the rear pages but text and illustrations are not affected. The bottom corner of the first free end paper is ripped off. There is some play to the front interior hinge with webbing visible but the covers are secure and the text block tight. DESCRIPTION: Terrific block print illustrations throughout in black and white. There are four prints that have color highlights that are very neat but I am not sure if this may have been done by a previous owner. Obviously the book has some issues but there are a lot of really nice illustrations throughout.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). This is a very rare book. In fact, I could find only one other copy for sale and that one is an ex-library book in pretty bad shape. The book here for sale is NOT ex-library and I've rated it Very Good, taking into account that it was published in 1930. You can see the covers in the photographs provided. Quite positively, they have only very minor soiling. The black lettering on the spine is still very bright and unworn. There is a little fraying at both spine ends (see second photo). And there is rub-through at the four corners and along parts of all six edges. The book is square and straight, and quite solidly bound. There are yellow illustrated inside covers and end papers that are very clean and in very good condition (there is one small closed tear). There is a very tiny red jag on the rear inside cover. The pages are in generally very nice condition. I found three edge tears, each only 1/2 of an inch and obviously away from the print and illustrations. The pages are generally quite clean. There are 32 unnumbered pages. The last 10 have a small stain at their bottom corner. I've provided a photograph of one such page. There are only a few other small spots of soiling. One or two pages have a corner crease. There also several thin creases in other places. There is a light bookseller stamping on the verso of the last page, a page with only the following printed at the bottom: 'Printed by Mortimer and Walling, Inc., New York, N.Y.' The stamping reads 5 (N) 188. There are no other markings anywhere in the book. There are no attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book. Zhenya (and Jan) Gay were in fact gay. Zhenya was born Eleanor Byrnes. She became a rather famous children's book illustrator. She was also the long-time companion and lover of Helen Reitman, aka Jan Gay. The couple met in about 1927 and began collaborating on children's books in 1930 (That would suggest that Pancho and his Burro, published in 1930, was their first collaboration). Eleanor briefly took Helen's surname of Reitman as her own before the couple changed both of their names to Jan and Zhenya Gay in about 1929. They lived together in New York until at least 1933 and later established a nudist colony together in Highlands, New York. Here is some interesting biographical information I just found on Jan Gay: She was born Helen Reitman, the daughter of anarchist Ben Reitman who was an American anarchist, author, and physician to the poor known as "the hobo doctor", but is best remembered today as one of radical Emma Goldman's lovers). In her youth, she had some success as a writer of children's books which were illustrated by her partner Eleanor Byrnes, but that likely ended with the 1932 publication of her book on nudism in Germany, "On Going Naked." The success of the book enabled Gay to start her own nudist colony in Highlands, New York called the Out-of-Doors Club. With Gay interviewing all prospective members prior to admission it became the most exclusive and famous of the nudists colonies of the time. The Out of Doors Club, Gay's book and Gay's nudist documentary "This Naked Age," which played as a "Road Show" throughout the 1930s, were the start of the nudist movement in the USA. In 1935, Gay helped to establish the New York Commission for the Study of Sex Variants, for which she served as both a subject of study and a researcher, but she split with the Commission as the study they conducted increasingly treated homosexuality as a pathology, while it was Gay's belief that greater knowledge would lead to greater acceptance. After Gay's departure, the study devolved into an ever-greater exercise in homophobia, even including an attempt to find the defining physical characteristics of the homosexual, in order to better protect society from their 'deviance'.
