In-8° (196 x 138 mm), 400 pp., demi-basane havane à coins, dos lisse orné, chiffre couronné au centre du plat supérieur, couvertures en couleurs conservées (reliure de l'époque). L'exemplaire du « beau-père de l'Europe » le roi Christian IX de Danemark Édition originale peu courante dont il n'y eu apparemment pas de grand papier. La 1ère de couverture figure un dignitaire militaire asiatique retenant par le bras une « dame blanche » et lui montrant au loin un monde en flamme. La quatrième représente sur une carte l'itinéraire de l'invasion jaune à travers l'Asie et l'Europe. Ce roman géopolitique est la mise en action, par une fiction aussi audacieuse que dramatique, de cette pensée d'Ëlisée Reclus : « En prévision de l'alliance des forces jaunes, des 450 millions d'hommes de l'Asie orientale, on s'est demandé avec crainte ce que feront ces foules quand des conquérants les auront disciplinées et s'en serviront contre le monde européen. Ne recommenceront-elles pas sous une autre forme les invasions mongoles, quand, munies des mêmes armes que les nations européennes, et plus unies, elles obéiront à la main de fer d'un autre Djenghiz-Khan. « Ou Timour Lenk? » Le « péril jaune » fut théorisé durant la dernière décennie du XIXe siècle. Traduction de l'allemand Gelbe Gefahr, l'expression s'impose en France en 1895 après la publication, dans Le Monde illustré, d'un article relatif à une reproduction d'un dessin éponyme allégorique du peintre allemand Hermann Knackfuss. Il devient dès lors une des « grandes peurs » de l'Europe. Ce roman en est une parfaite illustration. PROVENANCE : Christian IX, roi de Danemark, avec son chiffre doré sur la plat supérieur. Surnommé le « beau-père de l'Europe » dans les dernières années de sa vie, on compte parmi ses petits-enfants, Nicolas II de Russie, Constantin Ier de Grèce, George V du Royaume-Uni, Christian X de Danemark et Haakon VII de Norvège. On comprend donc qu'il put vouloir se « documenter » sur une telle « menace ». Quelques frottements, petit manque de papier (3 mm) au coin haut des 3 derniers feuillets.
