Pero don Pedro I fue siempre y ante todo un monarca de su tiempo; ni más violento ni más ecuánime que otros reyes peninsulares contemporáneos de mediados de la decimocuarta centuria. Componen esta obra un conjunto de trabajos inéditos que apalean todos al siglo XIV castellano y europeo como marco referencial de sus contenidos fundamentales. Una memoria registrada en los discursos cancillerescos y cronísticos que trasladaron una visión del pasado legitimadora del poder de la monarquía. Pero no sólo la Corona y sus servidores se empeñaron en cimentar un pasado a su medida. También los linajes nobles elaboraron una memoria que reafirmara su prestigio y justificara su hegemonía social y política presente y futura. Del mismo modo, la aristocracia urbana elaboró un relato que explicara el origen de sus privilegios, su relación con la Corona y su posición de preeminencia en sus ámbitos de actuación. Con todo, el relato de los acontecimientos del inmediato pasado, no sólo se utilizó al servicio del poder, también se esgrimió contra el poder establecido, particularmente contra el dominio feudal: una memoria antiseñorial que, en el caso del País Vasco, fue la base de una de las construcciones ideológicas más potentes del reino de Castilla gracias a la cual sus élites se aseguraron una notable influencia en la Corte y en la sociedad castellana.
