Libro
Hardcover. Condición: New. No Jacket. Text/NEW & Bright. Vintage 1955 Edition. DJ/None. Orange linen boards NF with trace fading to spine. A 1954 glimpse behind the Bamboo Curtain, 5 year's following the establishment of Communist China. Imperial China fell to the Republic of China (Kuo-ming Tang, Chiang Kai-shek) in 1911, which, in turn was overthrown by Communist China (formed 1921 by Mao Tse-tung) in 1949 with Chiang Kai-shek retreating to Taiwan. These critical impressions of the emerging bureaucratic style under Mao Zedong's post-revolution regime are from George Stafford Gale (1927 - 1990), Manchester Guardian lead journalist on labour affairs, who was one of 6 reporters accompanying the visit to China by a British Labour Party Delegation in 1954. 191 pgs in 10 chapters followed by an epilogue.

v + 166pp. Endpapers slightly foxed, dustjacket little worn, overall a good copy. "Mr. Gale accompanied the delegation of the British Labour Party to China and was one of the first half-dozen journalists to see the new China. He travelled over most of the length, if not the breadth of China and saw the streets cleared of flies and disease. He also saw the slave-labour prisons, the bright new factories and the huge physical reconstruction of China. Nor could he avoid noting the mental reconstruction of China - the brain-washing of six hundred million people. China he concludes is the better for its present good governance and the worse for the Orwell-esque features of that governance. There are no flies in China and, for that matter, neither are there any on the present Chinese Government, as far as the people of China are concerned." (Publisher's description).
