Condición: Very Good. London: Samuel French Limited (Acting Edition), 1951. Octavo; 76 pp. Light gray paper wrappers with illustration and text in black and red on cover. Spine toned with rubbed edges. Front wrapper starting to separate from text block but remains secure. Pages are clean and unmarked. Overall, a nice copy of a scarce book. This play by Vosper, originally named Spellbound, first appeared on Broadway in 1927. It was later performed in London in 1948 under the name People Like Us. This copy lists the actors from that production and a note stating that the production was canceled and banned from Great Britain by Lord Chamberlain. The play dramatized a well-known and controversial murder case involving Frederick Bywaters and Edith Thompson. Bywaters and Thompson were both charged with murder and hung for allegedly killing Thompson's husband in 1923. [Playbill Broadway Database; The New York Times, September 10, 1948.].
