Volume 1, of 2 only, with 7 engraved plates 729pp, lacks title- page, large paper copy, untrimmed in early half calf, marbled boards, covers rubbed, portions of calf chipped, top outer hinge cracked and held by strings, rear outer hinge cracked at head and foot. With the usual 5 plates plus the plates of Truro, and Penryn which usually appear in the second volume. 'Although Mr Hitchins wrote no part of this work, as he died just as he was going to commence it, yet the publishers retained his name on the title page. The History appeared in parts the first coming out in 1815. After the publication of the eighth part in 1817, the work was delayed for nearly seven years, owing to the bankruptcy of the publisher.' See Boase & Courtney's Bibliotheca Cornubiensis Vol 1. pages 120 & 121. First edition, first printing. Two uniformly bound large format volumes, probably the original bindings. Half leather with cloth boards. Gilt titles to the spine.some wear, but generally very good commensurate with age. These copies seem to have been bound without plates.

Full-Leather. Condición: Good+. Volume II Only. Very detailed and well researched Local History. Illustrated with 6 Engraved plates including a Double-Page view of Falmouth. Frontis Plate illustrated with Roche Rock & Hermitage. Other Plates; Penzance, Penryn, Mevagissey & Truro. Title Page (dated 1824) followed by "Table of Parishes". History commences with the Parish of "Advent (St. Anne) and continues in Alphabetical order to "Zennor", followed by the Scilly Islands. Contemporary Brown Full-Leather cover with Gilt Title, Decoration and horizontal Divisions to spine. 710 Pages, 2.2 Kilos, 10 3/4" Tall. Splits to leather down sides of spine but boards still attached. Wear to edges and corners. Previous owners name in corner of Endpaper, no other inscriptions. Some rubbing and scuffing to front and back with 3 pieces of leather missing from rear board (see photos). Pages and Plates in very good, clean condition. Falmouth Plate a little loose but still attached. Please ask if you would like any more Pictures or information. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

First editions, first printings. Good in original very worn original bindings with loss of some leather and front board of volume 1 detached. Sporadic foxing. Book plates to front pastedowns. All plates present (except View of Penrice in volume 2 which appears missing from all copies and was probably never included).

Narrow Decorative Gilt Border on fronts and backs. Marbled endpapers. 12" Tall, 5.8 kilos. Edge wear and leather worn at corners. Splits to leather down right side of spine of spine on vol I and part way down left side but boards firmly attached. Small bits of leather missing at bottom right corner of spine also a little insect damage to leather at bottom edge. Also a little rubbing. Vol. II has a little rubbing and small split down right side of spine, 2" long. Light brown stain at top half of frontis on vol. II. Small ink stains on 2 text pages. A little light foxing on some plates. No inscriptions. Comes with old press cutting about Cornish Storms. Please ask if you would like any more Pictures or information. Some trimming to pages, with light foxing throughout. Otherwise interior clean. In very good condition. First volume includes Religion of the Ancient Britons (including Druids, and circular stone monuments and architecture), a special section on the History of Prince (King) Arthur (p.p. 389-399), Customs and Manners of the Cornish, as well as agriculture, lakes, and rivers; the second volume feature a list of Parishes, a Historical Account of the Scilly Islands, an Account of Ancient Religious Houses & Hospitals, and more. The History of Cornwall was started by Fortescue Hitchins [1784-1814] a poet and esquire at St. Ives, Cornwall. It was completed after his death by Samuel Drew [1765-184], Cornish writer and theologian, who finished the greater portion of the work.
