It also contains a section on agriculture by Arizonan R.H. Forbes. This copy is signed on the front cover, indicating ownership, by then (1913) freshman Congressman Carl Hayden. Bindings either brown boards with gilt-lettered paneled leather spines (6 vols),these all have red-speckled text-block edgesor red texture cloth with double gilt lines across corners and beside spines with gilt-lettered paneled cloth spines (5 vols), spines of these moderately sun-faded, all in VG - Fine condition being clean and unworn bar one with small nick to top spine, leather spines black along cover edges but faded to brown on spines themselves with ends typically faded slightly further, viewed as a row they appear to be virtually uniform. Each vol. has numerous colour plates inc. f/pieces with tissue guards with some variation in how these are distributed, Vol.4 of Monkeys has unfolding map, I also note that Vol.1 of Monkeys has Errata sheet before Preface regarding invalidity of the 'Hattock' iPlate (VIII) due unavailability of specimen in UK, this however seems redundant for this edition as already omitted. Inoffensive small original ownership signature stamp 'C. Vardon' to 4 front end-papers, 1 has written wig. by same owner, 1 of the 5 actually has both. Full bibliographic and minor fault details, if any, details for individual volumes available on request from serious potential customers. The illustrators are not credited but all printed by Wymans & Sons, London. A very good set of the majority of volumes in this highly regarded series some of which are very scarce. 1st ed. published 1895. First printing. Two sheet map, of which the NLA has only the right hand sheet with the title, part of the Daisy Bates collection of maps. This map focuses on the southern coast including the capital Port Moresby, with the northern regions left mostly blank. There are four inset drawings of side views of mountains (elevations), and the border with German New Guinea is marked. Oro Province and Central Province. There are 3 insets of Owen Stanley Range, 4th of Peaks of Mt. Victoria. In 1883, Queensland attempted to annex the south-eastern corner of the New Guinea Island, fearing that Germany would take control of the entire eastern half of the island. In 1884 it became a Queensland protectorate and in 1888 it was annexed. 40 x 24", b&w, cream paper, original folds, closed tears at folds. NLA MAP RM 2717; Bib ID 1632755.
