- Jorge Luis Borges.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. By William Beckford of Fonthill. Edited, introduction and notes by Robert J. Gemmett. Rutherford: Farleigh Dickinson University Press, (1971). First edition thus, first printing. Fourteen illustrations on glossy black-and-white plates. The literary author most renowned for VATHEK, traveled through Europe at a youthful age, and kept a ruthlessly frank journal of observations and reflections, including his sometimes arrogant comments on the poor and working class folk he saw and engaged with, that was originally published, though suppressed, in 1783. Beckford tried to censor this work from public reading by burning more than 500 copies. The few remaining copies were sourced to reprint the journals verbatim, in this publication for the general public, that is enhanced with extensive notes and a well-informed introduction by Gemmett. Upper front corner slightly bumped, else nearly fine in fresh black cloth with gilt embossed titles to the spine; in a near fine dust jacket with a few soil spots, a mild crimp to the upper front corner tip, and a minuscule tear to the upper edge of the rear panel; original printed $20.00 price still intact to the front inner flap. Octavo; 328 pages; appendix; bibliography; and index.
