Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Hebridean Connection: Eachdruidhean Agus Sgeulachdan Bho Sheanachaidbean Uidhist Accounts and Stories of the Uist Sennachies; Angus John MacDonald (1900-1975), Knockline, North Uist, Sennachie; with introductions and notes by the editor Prof. Donald A. Fergusson; Editor and Publisher Professor Donald A. Fergusson, Halifax Nova Scotia, 1984. Text in Gaelic and English. North Uist (Scottish Gaelic: Uibhist a Tuath; Scots: North Uise) is an island and community in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. A Sennachie is a professional storyteller of family genealogy, history, and legend. From the blurb The North Uist sennachies of Iantruig nam Boid have made a substantial contribution to the preservation of Scottish Gaelic culture. Organized in the 1620s to prevent the utter destruction of the old Gaelic oine by the New Order of feudalism dominated by alien influences, these scholar-sennachies successfully preserved and passed on orally and directly, under their vows, the language and literature of their ancestors in the form of history, philosophy, song, and story. This process of transmission continued through the generations of Establishment control in North Uist and on until 1975 when the last member of this chain of sennachies died in Sydney, Australia. In order to carry out his vow to pass along to future generations what he had received through his father and others of the older members, Angus MacDonald, in a race against time during the last years of his life, committed to writing most of the vast accumulation of oral materials that he had preserved in his prodigious memory. This is what appears, in the original Gaelic and in English translation, in the two major sections of The Hebridean Connection, the historical accounts and the stories. A third vocabulary section or rare words and expressions from these materials has been added. Professor Fergusson, a native of Port Morien, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, has contributed a foreword, introductions to the several sections, notes on various families, many of whose members were among the flood of emigrants to Canada in the mid-nineteenth century, and substantial footnotes on the total materials, derived from his years of research in this cultural field. The book contains two fold-out charts see photos one is a map of North Uist, and the other is a Genealogical Chart of some of the families. This very large format book, 593 pages is in near-fine condition in a very-good dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. This large and heavy book may require additional postage.
