CONDITION: Near Fine. The talented Nova Scotia-born shipwright spent some of his early formative working years in Newburyport, Massachusetts at the John Currier Jr., and then the Currier & Townsend Shipyards, designing and building some of the fastest clipper and packet ships then known. Later he would relocate to open his own yard in East Boston. Records with McKay-built ships were set between between Boston and Liverpool, England, on the the White Star Line's "Joshua Bates"(1844,) and from New York and San Francisco on "The Flying Cloud," (1853.) Written by his grandson, this book details McKay's career with specific information on each of the ships he built, including acknowledgement of his wife, Albenia Boole's, contributions to his engineering skills. In the foreward, James C. Farrel describes how the innovations of the clipper ship enabled expanded trade with China and the Far East, and the settlement of other far-flung places such as Australia and New Zealand.
