Hardback, Dustjacket, Book in Very Good condition, Dustjacket Fair only. Blue cloth boards slightly rubbed. Title in red cloth label to spine. Not inscribed. 256 Pages. Illustrated. Pictorial dustjacket rubbed, chipped and torn to edges. Price clipped. Margaret Fry used to say that destiny had pushed her towards penal reform as a ju-jitsu expert overcomes his opponent, by a series of taps. Her natural inclination was to follow her brother Roger in his devotion to the visual arts. She saw herself as typical of those Late Victorian women of independent means whose newly-gained privilages of education laid on them the obligation to speak for other people whose voices were still unheard. At Birmingham and Oxford she influenced at least two generations of university women. She worked for civilan victims in two world wars. She was one of the first women magistrates, an original member of the University Grants Committee and a Governor of the BBC. It was as an expert in penal affairs that she achieved world-wide distinction. But as long as those who knew her survive, she will be remembered above all for the warmth and lustre of her personality.
