Rust colored cloth over beveled boards, gilt spine lettering and decoration, frontis engraving, 390 pages. Externally quite good because of brown cloth outer cover that was glued to the inside of the covers, residue of which remains at the outer edges inside the covers, front free endpaper absent, text block sound but not tight with a few loosened but not detached pages, pages mainly clean with light to moderate foxing, East Weatoghe School Library No. 97 written on verso of frontis plate which has bled through to the image, no other markings. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

In good condition, with minor rubbing and wear to exterior, primarily along edges and corners. Hinges remain in good condition with light wear towards front and text block remains bound well. Attractive lettering and cross design in gilt on spine. Partial looseness of blank end page at front prior to frontispiece. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. A scarce account of a Union officer's experiences in the Civil War, originally published as individual letters during the war and compiled and printed shortly after the war's end. COLU1866BCDX.

There is minor wear at the top and bottom of the spine and the corners are very lightly worn. There is a contemporary previous owner's inscription, and a previous owner's bookplate.
