Gillette, with Doyle's aide and permission adapted the Holmes stories to this two act play, revised in 1976 by Baskervilles Investments, Stella M. Whyte, and Paramount Pictures, and was then immediately employed for use by The Royal Shakespeare Company. Gillette, as a premiere actor, made Sherlock his signature role, playing the character on stage more than 1300 times in thirty years, and starring in the 1916 silent film and numerous radio performances. Light rubbing to the lower spine edge, else very nearly fine and tight in black linen over brown boards with gilt embossed titles to the spine; in a very good plus dust jacket with a 1.5 inch tear from the upper edge of the front panel and a short tear to the lower spine edge; original printed $7.95 price still intact to the front inner flap. Conan Doyle had finished his Holmes saga and killed him off in, The Final Problem, published in 1893. A few years later, Conan Doyle found himself in need of further income, as he was planning to build a new home, called "Undershaw". He decided to take his character to the stage and wrote a play. After various communications in search of a producer who really believed in the script of the play, it was suggested Doyle build upon the theatrical version written by the actor, William Gillette.
