Cloth with dustjacket. Condición: Gut. XV, 271 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, minimale Randläsuren, Buchrücken ausgeblichen, Kopfschnitt angeschmutzt, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatz / dust jacket rubbed, minimal edgewear, spine faded, top edge soiled, pencil annotation on endpaper. - This collection of nine original essays is addressed to the growing number of philosophers, classicists, and intellectual historians who are interested in the development of Greek thought after Aristotle. The book s particular concern is the réévaluation of philosophy in the period from about 50 B.C. to A.D. 200. The intellectual climate of this time has been dismissively designated "eclectic," a term suggesting uncritical assemblage of divergent doctrines by thinkers who lacked originality and analytical acumen. These essays explore the meaning and history of "eclecticism" in the context of ancient philosophy and seek to provide more accurate descriptions of the work of such philosophers as Cicero, Philo of Alexandria, Plutarch, and the Neopythagoreans. They explore the distinctive character of intellectual enquiry at this time the criterion of truth, the creative imagination, and the antecedents of our modern notion of the will. Collectively, these essays serve to dismiss the term "eclecticism" in its perjorative sense as a characterization of the philosophy of this period. What emerges as preoccupations of the period are the creative use of the intellectual tradition, the extension of philosophy into literary and scientific study, and the rational foundations of orthodoxy and heterodoxy. Thus the book s findings will be useful to anyone interested in the cultural history of the period. / Contents Preface vii Notes on contributors ix Abbreviations xi Chronology xiii Introduction I i. "More colloquy than compendium, this remarkable volume shows scholars shining as teachers. Ingeniously, editors Brunschwig and Lloyd have lured contributors into lively reflections. Readers encounter impassioned argument about 'the invention of politics' and truthfulness in history, ideal for undergraduates seeking context for their study of primary texts. The collection holds delights. This is an edition you should order immediately." - P. W.
