First edition. Original green striated and embossed cloth with vignette of hourglass and scythe on front cover. Small 12mo, 142 + [3] pp. Good condition, binding tightened. Hand-colored advertisement card for Dickinson's printing company on front pastedown, sample card for Dickinson's embossed cards on rear pastedown. Two-page folding plan of Boston. Many woodcut illustrations of Boston buildings and landmarks. News of Boston up to the year 1842 up to November, so printing must have been done in December, 1842, for use in 1843. A number of the memo pages have been used for notes, e.g., December 4, The end of the year, December 8, very cold. These little notes in pencil by an actual user, which are hard to read, give the flavor of the time. Intriguingly, in the memo page for August a note is written down and across about half of the page in a much more skilled calligraphic hand "Marathon, London England, 1858." A sailing ship of that name made the Atlantic crossing in the 1850s.
