Hardcover. Condición: Good. GRAY COVER, BLACK PRINT SPINE, INSIDE IS TIGHT AND CLEAN WITH NO MARKINGS. VOLUME NUMBER III OF THREE, LIBRARY RAISED STAMP TITLE PAGE. BURTON WAS A SCHOLAR AT OXFORD AND WROTE THIS QUITE DETAILED WORK IN AN EFFORT TO HELP HIMSELF AND OTHERS. HIS PASSION FOR PSYCHOLOGY HELPED GUIDE HIM. NO DATE, CIRCA 1890. Robert Burton (8 February 1577 25 January 1640) was an English scholar at Oxford University, best known for the classic The Anatomy of Melancholy. He was also the incumbent of St Thomas the Martyr, Oxford, and of Seagrave in Leicestershire. Burton's Melancholy focuses sharply on the self; unlike Bacon, Burton assumes that knowledge of psychology, not natural science, is humankind's greatest need. His enormous treatise is considered "delightful" by critics; it examines in encyclopaedic detail the ubiquitous Jacobean malady, melancholy, supposedly caused by an excess of "black bile", according to the humour theory fashionable at the time. The Anatomy of Melancholy (full title: The Anatomy of Melancholy, What it is: With all the Kinds, Causes, Symptomes, Prognostickes, and Several Cures of it. In Three Maine Partitions with their several Sections, Members, and Subsections. Philosophically, Medicinally, Historically, Opened and Cut Up) is a book by Robert Burton, first published in 1621, but republished five more times over the next seventeen years with massive alterations and expansions. ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.

Rest of Subtitle: With their several sections and subsections, philosophically, medically, historically opened and cut up. With a satirical preface, conducing to the following discourse. A new edition. Corrected, and enriched by translations of the numerous classical extracts. By Democritus Minor. "The book is presented as a medical textbook in which Burton applies his vast and varied learning, in the scholastic manner, to the subject of melancholia (which includes but not limited to, what is now termed clinical depression). It is as much a work of literature as it is a scientific or philosophical text. It uses melancholy as the lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinized, and virtually the entire contents of a 17th century library are marshalled into service of this goal. It is encyclopedic in its range and reference". Originally published in1621, it grew in size to maintain its current dimensions. A classic of the 17th century, just after the death of Shakespeare. Nice copy, 747 pp. BP.
