Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Illustrated by N.C. Wyeth Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First edition dated MCMXVII (1917) to title page; no later dates or printings mentioned. In full ORIGINAL dust jacket. Printed jackets were apparently enough of an innovation in 1917 that McKay simply left flaps and rear panel blank. Thus, unclipped front flap does not bear and has never born a price. The lovely color Wyeth frontispiece (the frontispiece IS the title page, actually) and 8 color plates are all firmly in place. There are NO tissue guards. This book will close its own text block, shows NO rub to corners, hinges are great. A few small brown spots to jacket spine, only, and there are some folds and wrinkling to jacket front flap. No musty smell, not ex-library, no previous owner markings. Green topstain. (Although McKay's 1928, 1937, and 1947 publisher's statements, per Zempel & Verkler, were "There isn't any way you could identify the first editions of our books," some contend the true 1917 first printing, first state, of this title must have tissue guards to plates, and Top Edges Gilt, unlike this copy, of which the top edge is stained green.) Original jacket is chipped to edges and is missing top 1/4-inch of spine. There have been numerous film versions, of course, including the 1922 Alan Dwan silent starring Douglas Fairbanks (Sr.), though the classic remains the 1938 entry starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, and Claude Rains. 362 pp. Reduced from $470.
