Soft cover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. This copy feels like new. War has been an unforgettable, powerful experience for many New Zealanders, and a defining element in the evolution of New Zealand as a nation. The South African War - the "Boer War" of 1899-1902 - was New Zealand's first overseas war, in which more than 6,000 people fought and 230 lost their lives. This collection of essays by leading historians presents various perspectives on New Zealand's involvement in this historical event. Opposition to the war, women and Maori in the war, the Australian perspective, and the Montreal Flag Riot of 1900 are all subjtects covered. Several distinguished overseas historians, inluding Tom Pakenham and Carman Miller, set the New Zealand effort in a wider imperial framework.

Card Cover, Excellent clean copy, illustrated with b&w photographs, ex University library stamp on first half title page only, cover leading corner tips are lightly rubbed and rolled. One Flag One Queen One Tongue: New Zealand, The British Empire and The South African War. The South African War was New Zealand's first overseas war - and one of its most popular. More than 40,000 people farewelled the First Contingent when it left Wellington for South Africa in October 1899. Furtyher contingents were quickly raised from the many volunteers who had come forward from all parts of the country. More than 6000 men would evenually serve in South Africa and fought on the veldt, and 230 of them lost their lives, most of them were mounted infantry. So too would a limited number of women as nurses and schoolteachers. Despite the strident jingoism that characterised the early stages of New Zealand's participation in the struggle against the Boers, not everybody supported the decision to send troops to South Africa. Some opposed it out of pacifist conviction, others because of doubts about the justice of the British cause, others again because of longstanding grevances against the British Empire unrelated to the war. Aspects of New Zealand's experience in the South African War and some consideration of the wider imperial context are explored in thirteen authoritative essays. New light is thrown on New Zealand's involvement in a conflict which has not been widely studied but was a significant precursor to the larger wars of the twentieth century. Hardback with dustjacket. illustrated edition. This book is a collection of essays arising out of the 'Zealandia's Great War' conference organised by the New Zealand Military History Committee in November 2003. In 32 essays by distinguished military historians from New Zealand and around the world, various aspects of New Zealand's involvement in World War One are discussed. Subjects include the Pioneer Maori Battalion, women who opposed the war, the early years of the RSA, Gallipoli, the infantry on the Somme, New Zealand's involvement in the naval war, prostitution and the New Zealand soldier, the Home Defence, religion in the First World War, and the Armistice. New Zealand's Great War is a fascinating miscellany of informed comment on and insight into the event that did most to shape New Zealand as a nation. Contributors include New Zealand's own Chris Pugsley, Glyn Harper, Terry Kinloch, Monty Soutar, Megan Hutching, Vincent Orange and Bronwyn Dalley, as well as Peter Dennis, Jeffrey Grey, Jennifer Keene, Jenny McLeod, Pierre Purseigle, Peter Stanley and Gary Sheffield from overseas. First published March 2007. Dustjacket light wear to edges.
