Good-plus in torn dust-wrapper. Relevant pencil notes to front end-paper. "In this book the author draws on experience reaching back to 1914 when, at the age of thirteen, he was given his first .22 rifle. It deals with shooting in this country and South America, always from the angle of the man who loads his own cartridges and effects as many of his own repairs as possible. As he points out, there was a period when the home-loading of ball or shotgun cartridges was looked upon as an unnecessary waste of time, in the days when good cartridges were cheap and plentiful, but today, when they are neither cheap nor as plentiful as we should like, there appears to be a considerable increase in the number of shooters who are thinking seriously about saving their used cases and reloading them. All the necessary instructions to do so will be found in this book, together with hitherto unpublished information about the new British powders that are now being made available to home-loaders." Chapters include: Part One - Yesterday and Today: War!; First right and left; Pistols for two; Wildfowl; Muzzle loader v. repeater; The cougar; Hunting with Indians in the Chaco; An occurence on the Rio Apa; Thoughts on the handgun; Muzzle-loading rifles and guns; A long-departed sportsman. Part Two - Mechanics of shotgun shooting: Shooting today; Choosing gun - its gauge and fit; Care and maintenance; Accidents due to ignorance and carelessness; Accidents due to mechanical causes; Powder and shot; Reloading shot cartridges; The wadless crimp. Part Three - In the Field: On the safe and mannerly handling of guns; Hints on hitting; Pest control (1) general; Pest control (2) rabbits and pigeons; Game on a rough shoot - 2 chapters; How to find cheap shooting. .

(Hardcover, 1961). 1961 1st edition. Small 8vo (122 x 189mm). Pp124. B/w photograph plates, b/w line illustrations. Black boards, gilt and mauve titles to spine. Owner's name to fep, slight browning to end-papers and edges but very good in slightly used dust-wrapper. Thurlow Craig spent the 1920's working as a gaucho in South America, and maintained an active interest in horsemanship all his life. "Pony trekking makes a fascinating companion-sport to show-jumping, polo and hunting, for it involves points of horsemanship which, in this country, fell into limbo when mechanised transport ousted the horse from the roads as a means of serious transport. This book is badly needed, for there have been isolated reports of two-year-old ponies pressed into trekking service, of ponies and horses overworked or underfed on the trek, and so on. Emphasis is placed on how best to maintain the best type of saddle, not for the greater comfort of the rider but for the greatest possible comfort to the horse or pony being ridden day after day, mile after mile. Great attention is also given to care and feeding on the trek. The author has studied the art of long-distance horsemanship for thirty-eigh years. Today, riding fourteen and a half stone when fully equipped, he can maintain a hundred and eighty miles a week in the Welsh mountains on a fourteen-hand cob, travelling the old bridle paths and by-lanes. Here he tells you exactly how to go about it." .
