Les premiers travaux du comte de Saint-Simon font de lui un précurseur de la philosophie positiviste et de la science sociale (Lettres d'un habitant de Genève à ses concitoyens, 1803 ; Introduction aux travaux scientifiques du XIXe siècle, 1807). C'est plus tard, avec la création de la revue L'Industrie (1816), la publication de L'Organisateur avec Auguste Comte (1819 -1820) et Du Système Industriel (1820 -1822), que s'affirment les thèses de son industrialisme optimiste : effondrement de l'Ancien Régime, avènement de la société industrielle gérée par les producteurs, où s'harmoniseront spontanément les intérêts des chefs d'entreprise et des ouvriers. Avec cette lettre, datée 1808, le lecteur est plongé dans la période où Saint-Simon est ruiné ; il devient copiste au Mont-de-Piété pour mille francs par an, est hébergé chez Diard, qui le recueille et le nourrit. Pour publier et continuer son oeuvre (Esquisse d'une nouvelle Encyclopédie et Introduction aux travaux scientifiques du XIXe siècle) des aides sont indispensables ; il multiplie les démarches. Cette lettre, adressée à un puissant personnage de l'époque demeuré anonyme, en est l'exemple :« Monseigneur, Les moyens de prouver à Votre Excellence que je mérite les grâces que je sollicite d'Elle me manquent entièrement. Mes ressources sont épuisées ; et l'impression de mon Ouvrage arrêtée. Dans l'impuissance absolue de m'en procurer, je prends la liberté de prier Votre Excellence de vouloir bien me faire le prêt de 300 F. Un polytechnicien de dix-neuf ans, Auguste Comte, va remplacer auprès de lui Augustin Thierry en qualité de secrétaire. C?est le début d?une collaboration intellectuelle entre deux grands esprits.
