Pagination continue (la seconde partie - page 259 - possède sa propre page de titre comprise dans la pagination). Les deux dernières pages sont un catalogue des livres qui se trouvent chez le libraire Jean Aelberts (sic). Reliure plein maroquin vert, dos à nerfs richement orné aux petits fers dorés, pièce de titre, triple-filet doré en encadrement des plats, filet doré sur les coupes, roulette dorée en encadrement intérieur des plats, doublures et gardes de papier peigne, tranches dorées (fine reliure non signée, probablement anglaise, exécutée vers 1840 ? 1850 ? à l'imitation des reliures françaises du XVIIIe siècle - reliure parfaitement réalisée sortant probablement d'un atelier anglais réputé - peut-être RIVIERE (?) à ses débuts. Reliure parfaitement conservée. Intérieur parfait. Une des éditions données à l'étranger à la date de 1692. La première édition de ce texte a été donnée en France par le libraire Claude Barbin (3 volumes in-12) la même année. L'une des longues nouvelles historiques dont Madame d'Aulnoy (1651-1705) avait le secret. Ce roman historique a pour sujet l'histoire de Jean de Bourbon. Jean de Bourbon-Vendôme (1378-1457), le troisième fils de Catherine de Vendôme et de Jean Ier de Bourbon (né en 1344 - mort le 11 juin 1393, comte de La Marche (Jean Ier : 1362-1393), de Vendôme et de Castres (Jean VII : 1372-1393), pair de France), lui-même fils de Jacques Ier, comte de La Marche, et de Jeanne de Châtillon-Saint-Pol, dame de Leuze, Condé, Duisant et Carency, ces trois personnages de la Maison de Bourbon étant des ancêtres par les mâles du roi de France Henri IV. Une note manuscrite à la plume sur le premier feuillet blanc indique : "Jean de Bourbon, seigneur de Carency en Artois, d'Aubigny, de Bucquoy, etc., chambellan du roy Charles VI, troisième fils de Jean de Bourbon comte de la Marche et de Catherine comtesse de Vendôme, né circa 1367, accompagna ses deux frères ainés en Angleterre pour faire la guerre au roy Henry IV usurpateur de la couronne sur Richard II, conduisit en Suisse la reine de Chypre avant le mois de janvier 1455." Madame d'Aulnoy est plus connue aujourd'hui pour ses contes des fées que pour ses romans historiques à rallonge pourtant estimables mais tombés aujourd'hui dans les oubliettes de la littérature. Contemporaine de Madame de La Fayette et de la marquise de Sévigné, liée d'amitié avec Saint-Évremond et avec plusieurs conteuses du siècle comme Henriette-Julie de Murat et Marie-Jeanne L'Héritier, Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy publie, dès 1690, ses premiers récits : les Mémoires sur la cour d'Espagne, l'Histoire d'Hippolyte, comte de Douglas ou la Relation du voyage d'Espagne (1691), les Mémoires des aventures de la cour de France (1692), les Mémoires secrets de plusieurs grands princes de la cour (1696). Ces productions littéraires estimées (à l'époque) sont suivies des contes qui ont assuré sa notoriété. Après le succès des Contes de ma mère l'Oye de Charles Perrault en 1697, elle fait paraître les quatre volumes des Contes des fées, suivis des Contes nouveaux ou les Fées à la mode, respectivement parus en 1697 et 1698 et qui lui valent la célébrité, jusqu'à surpasser Perrault selon certains (Sophie Raynard, La Seconde Préciosité : floraison des conteuses de 1690 à 1756, Tübingen, Gunter Narr Verlag, 2002, 512 p.). Provenances anglaises : des bibliothèques Ralph William Grey (1819-1869), homme politique britannique (avec son ex libris gravé armorié) et Robert J. Hayhurst (avec son ex libris gravé).
