"Their deft handlng of the boxing story's deceptively simple formula shows that it can deliver light jabs of suspense as well as bruising irony. For all these writers, boxing is not only an exciting elemental drama, but also a metaphor: for losing and winning in life as well as in the ring. There's the bell! Get ready to go twenty-one rounds with the best." Contents include: Intro by Martin H. Greenberg / Fixed by Max Brand / Encounter With a King by William F. Original photograph of Ernest Hemingway and actress Martine Carol with the following hand written in Spanish an unknown hand on the verso: ÒErnest Hemingway y Martine Carol en ÔLa Timea Pa VigiaÕ San Francisco de Paula ÔLa Habana BabaÕ Sep-23-1956.Ó Also on the verso, stamped in blue is ÒBohemia Archivo / Martine Carol / Chez Hemingway / La Havane.Ó In this casual photo Hemingway and Miss Carol are standing outside in HemingwayÕs garden enjoying a laugh. Miss Carol is as lovely as ever, wearing a summer dress and pretty earrings. Fine. Hemingway and his wife Martha Gellhorn moved to Cuba in 1939, and in 1940 bought the "Finca Vigia" ("Lookout Farm"). In 1960, he left Cuba and Finca Vigia for the last time. Martine Carol (1920 - 1967) reigned as FranceÕs cinematic sex siren in the 1950s, with memorable roles in such films as Wolf Farm (1943), Adorable Creatures (1952), Sins of the Borgias (1953), Madame du Barry (1954) and Nana (1954), and the title role in Max Ophuls' Lola Montes (1955) portraying a charismatic and alluring circus performer.

Heimburg, Carol Ilustrador. 16mo. (10)ff. One of fifty copies, signed by the artist. Eight etched portraits of Hemingway, all in different sizes and some in color. Heimburg's hand reflects, as do many such acolytes, the instruction and style of her mentor, Leonard Baskin. As preface to the portraits Heimburg has included an excerpt from Hemingway's "Banal Story." Bound in full gray cloth with gilt titling to spine. Mild rubbing to corner, slight lean to spine, else fine. Although not explicitly stated, this copy is from the library of fine printer, Kim Merker.
