Condición: Fair. No Edition Remarks. 324 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth. Black and white illustrated plates. Light foxing and tanning to pages and plates. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Moderate cracking to gutters causing some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Pen inscription to front free endpaper. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild sunning and scuffing overall. Spine has minor tanning with soft crushing to ends. Book has a slight forward lean.

This edition includes the appendices of the programs of entertainment of the crews, the table of game, etc, but was omitted in later editions. This copy includes the two double page color plates of crews and flags of the spring and autumn sledges, not included with all copies. Arctic Bibliog 10926: 'The author commanded the Alert during the British Arctic Expedition under Nares to the North Polar Sea, wintering at Cape Sheridan, North Ellesmer Island. . . His narrative contains detailed account of the passage through the ice from Smith Sound northward, wintering the ship, entertaining the crew, itineraries'. A picture of this book is available on request.

Minor soiling and foxing on the preliminary leaves otherwise a fine clean copy internally. Arctic Biblio. 10926. The copy of Alfred Arthur Chase Parr who was second lieutenant on the Alert. Parr has boldly signed the top of the the half title. Markham was captain of the ALERT during the Nares expedition. Copies of Expedition related titles with fellow Explorer's associations are very scarce on the market.
