Sein erster Roman This Side of Paradise (Diesseits vom Paradies), den er als 23-Jähriger Ende März 1920 veröffentlichte, machte ihn in kurzer Zeit berühmt. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Zelda Sayre führte er in den 1920er Jahren ein exzessives Leben. Das Ehepaar wurde in der US-amerikanischen Öffentlichkeit als typische Vertreter ihrer Generation wahrgenommen. Bereits in den 1930er Jahren war F. Scott Fitzgerald jedoch weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten. Dazu trugen auch sein Alkoholismus und die psychische Erkrankung seiner Frau bei. F. Scott Fitzgerald starb 1940 im Alter von nur 44 Jahren in der Überzeugung, sein Lebensziel verfehlt zu haben, sich als bedeutender Autor seiner Zeit zu beweisen.
