Quarto; paperback; 112pp., with many colour illustrations. Mild wear; covers mildly scuffed. Very good to near fine. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Exhibition catalogue. Paris in the nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century - until the disruption of World War II - was the unrivalled centre of the Western art world. The capital's extraordinarily creative milieu is demonstrated by the number of artistic movements which emerged in and around the city: Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, the Nabi, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism. Enticed by the intellectual financial and sensual opportunities the city provided, French artists congregated in their capital, while artists from other countries also flocked to this artistic mecca, with many spending much of their lives there or returning repeatedly. The supportive environment and a vibrant and bohemian lifestyle appealed to many young artists, while the political and cultural climate of Europe ensured a steady influx of artists. This catalogue mirrors the prolific graphic activity of the 1890s when over half of the selected prints were produced. The balance of works in the twentieth century is more evenly divided between prints and drawings although it is worth noting that two of the drawings, Chagall's 'The lion and the rat' and Picasso's 'The pose of the model', were produced as designs for books. The book explores the themes of the historical and social development of Paris.
