First edition, first impression, presentation copy with an excellent motoring association, inscribed by the author on the verso of the title page to a fellow motorist: "To Rosie Shapland, with the compliments of the Author, Mildred Bruce". This is the account of a mammoth car journey from Scotland to north Africa. Signed copies are rarely encountered in commerce. Mildred Bruce (1895-1990) started breaking records at the age of 15 when the police caught her doing 67 mph on her brother's motorcycle and she became the first woman to be charged for speeding. She went on to win the Coupe des Dames at the Monte Carlo rally in 1927, covering 1,700 miles in 72 hours. She also took to motorboats, breaking the 24-hour long-distance record on the Atlantic in 1929 and making the first crossing of the Atlantic. Furthermore, she established the women's record for the longest solo flight in 1930, from London to Japan, covering 16,620 kilometres in 25 flying days. The Times, 13 November 1931, describes the flight as "a series of narrowest escapes". She later joined a flying circus and set up a courier service at Croydon aerodrome. Mrs Bruce was still active at 78, test driving for the Ford Motor Company at the Thruxton circuit, at which time she remarked that "going slowly always made me tired" (Robinson). Mildred Bruce was one of the few women of her day to pursue a successful career in aviation, alongside her continued work in motoring. "Her epic journey around the world in 1930 confirmed to the public the stamina of women pilots, while the very casualness of her approach made travel by light aircraft seem less exceptional. It helped in the portrayal of the light plane as the 'aerial motor car'" (ODNB). She was saluted by the key aviation magazine Aeroplane in August 1932: "she has always proved herself to be full of real courage and energy. and whenever she has been beaten she has proved herself to be a thorough sportsman". Provenance: the recipient of this copy, Rosie Shapland, is likely the fellow motorist mentioned in Motorsport as winner of both the ladies' and first-class awards at the VSCC Madresfield driving tests of 1993, in a Talbot. Robinson p. 7. The Times, 13 November 1931; "V-C Miscellany", Motorsport, December 1993. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, bottom edge uncut. With half-tone photographic frontispiece of Bruce, and 35 similar plates, map endpapers of the route travelled. A touch of rubbing, spine sunned and with a few short tears to spine, gilt oxidised, gutter repaired at front free endpaper and half-title, some foxing or dust soiling, small hole to plate facing p. 233, remaining a good and square copy.
