With forty illustrations by Phiz and Marcus Stone. A second edition of the first novel in Anthony Trollope's Palliser series, with forty illustrations by popular Victorian illustrators Hablot Knight Browne and Marcus Stone, collated and complete. Encompassing several literary genres, the six Palliser novels blend family saga, bildungsroman, satire, and picaresque. The present novel follows three parallel stories of courtship and marriage. With a blind stamp to the front endpaper from W. H. Smith & Sons. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine. Very lightly bumped to the tail of the spine, a little more so to the head. The front and rear hinges have failed but the spine has been adhered. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd handling mark. Good. book.

    Early printing. Bound in contemporary half green morocco and green pebble cloth boards, with five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and titles in gilt to the spine. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Large 8vo. 624 pp. With 39 illustrations and an illustrated title page by "Phiz". A very good copy, the binding showing a little rubbing and a few light marks remains square and firm. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages.     First edition. Octavo. Handsomely bound for Henry Sotheran Ltd. in early twentieth-century half brown calf over red-brown linen boards, the spine with five raised bands and titles in gilt. Top edge gilt. Pale marbled endpapers. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece, with tissue-guard, and 39 further engraved plates by Halbot Knight Browne (aka 'Phiz'). Lacking the half-title. A very good copy, the binding square and tight. The contents with spotting to the plates (heavier to some), two plates with minor tears neatly repaired with tissue verso, and a stain to the bottom margin of one plate, are otherwise in good order. The first edition in book form of Dickens's third novel, originally issued in parts between 1838 and 1839, smartly bound for Sotheran's of London during the early twentieth century.

Bound in half brown morocco over marbled boards, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt title in one compartment, gilt tooling in remainder, gilt borders on covers, all edges marbled. Generously illustrated with 26 steel engravings and 9 wood engravings, all by "Phiz" (Halbot Knight Browne), as well as an engraved portrait of the author on the frontispiece with his facsimile signature. First published in 12 monthly parts in 1842-43, this is the first edition in book form, containing the complete Jack Hinton novel. Other novels were subequently published in the "Our Mess" series, named after other members of the fictional military "Mess" devised by Lever. The author, Charles James Lever (1806 1872) was an Irish novelist and raconteur, whose novels, according to Anthony Trollope, were just like his conversation. Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882) was an English illustrator, etcher, and painter best known as the illustrator of the novels of Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth, under the pen-name of Phiz. Former owner's signature on half-title, old bibliographic note ("First Edition") in pencil on fep, edges and covers moderately rubbed and worn, interior hinges starting, all illustrations moderately foxed, else fine; otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean. Collated, complete. Robert Smith Surtees was a popular sporting writer, beginning his writing live by contributing to the "Sporting Magazine". His best novel is often considered to be "Mr Sponge"s Sporting Tour", with his hero, Soapey Sponge, being as popular as his comic character Jorrocks, featured in numerous novels, including "Handley Cross". His comical novels are engaging and witty, with his writing style and character sometimes being compared to Charles Dickens. Most of these volumes are illustrated by John Leech, best known for his work in "Punch", the comical political satire magazine. Throughout his career he illustrated many editions of novels, including "Oliver Twist", "The Ingoldsby Legends", and the first edition of "A Christmas Carol". With further illustrations by Halbot Knight Browne, best known by his pen-name "Phiz", who illustrated many of Charles Dickens" novels. Undated, dated from Jisc. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Rear board of 'Ask Mama' is bowed. Boards of 'Handley Cross' are lightly bowed. Light fading to the spines. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Some light marks to the boards and spines. Front hinge of 'Ask Mama' and 'Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour' are starting but firm. With prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedowns, 'Christmas 1937', with some text amateurly covered. 'Plain or Ringlets', 'Mr. Romford's Hounds', 'Hawbuck Grange', and 'Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour' are firmly bound, whereas 'Ask Mama' and 'Handley Cross' are generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Some pages of 'Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour' uncut to the fore edge. Small mark to the first few pages of 'Ask Mama'. Small mark to the margin of plate facing page 352 in 'Handley Cross'. Very Good. book.
