Scott Petty who transcribed the letters and wrote an introduction to the book, 11 inches, xx + 471 pages, maps, illustrations by John Groth, notes, appendices, index, facsimile endpapers, burgundy cloth over boards with gilt titles and illustration on front board, illustrated dustjacket. Spine ends softened, dent in lower edge of front board, otherwise fine; jacket lightly edgeworn, spine faded and ends puckered, lightly soiled, quarter-inch closed tear. Petty was a lawyer living in Bastrop, Texas, before he volunteered. His letters begin on Nov. 5, 1861, and continue on a regular basis until April 2, 1864. The letters allude to army life in camp and on the march, to wartime conditions on the home front, to the falteriing morale of the rank and file in the face of Confederate defeats, to judgements concerninig generals and military strategies. Brick and mortar bookshop since 1975!. Signed.
