Hardcover. x, [1], 251 p.; color frontis. and halftone of portrait bust; 22 cm. [Mrs William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister, 1809-1898] 'Her life was to be crammed hardly less full than his, yet she conducted it on a system of inspired improvisation calculated to drive any orderly man crazy. That William never allowed himself to be driven crazy speaks volumes for his self-control and also for his sense of humour, a quality with which he is seldom credited. .Over one vitally important matter Catherine was neither careless nor casual. Very early in their married life William gave her the choice between knowing none of his political secrets and knowing them all but preserving absolute secrecy. Rather naturally she chose the latter alternative, and her indiscretions were so few as to be practically non-existent. One of the most moving of the many letters preserved at Hawarden was written after one of her rare slips of the tongue. It is a single sheet of paper, undated, and addressed on one side simply to "Mrs. Gladstone". On the other side are three brief sentences: "Do not be vexed. I am not. It is the first time you ever made a little mistake. W. E. G." In these early days, however, before time had taught him tolerance, William must have been much irritated by his wife's Incurable and incredible untidiness. His drawers were always immaculately neat; hers were a byword in the family for their lack of order. In the Glynnese language two words, offal and groutal, stood for different degrees of rubbish, defined as follows: "Offal: All Mrs. Gladstone's drawers. Groutal: All Lady Lyttelton's drawers."' (p. 37 f.) Good orig. green boards, page edges lt. spotted.
