Folio and pages are very neat and clean. John Bartlett Goodman III (1901-1991) was an American art director and wrote a comprehensive encyclopedia (which was never published) on the 762 ships that traveled from the East Coast to California during the Gold Rush, titled, "California Gold Rush Fleet Encyclopedia of Vessels Sailing from the East Coast of the United States and Canada for San Francisco, December 7, 1848-December3, 1849." The encyclopedia described the histories of the vessels which were organized A-Z; The Key corresponds to the encyclopedia and is also in alphabetical order. The Key lists the ships' specifications charts and tables, such as where and when they were built, their masters, and what happened to them.

The most common engravers of plates are J.C. Armytage, W.J. Edwards, T. Knight, R. Wallis, Chas. Hall, T.W. Hunt, and J. Stephenson. Some of the portraits are based on daguerrotypes by Mathew Brady. Soundly bound in matching publisher's deluxe trade binding of full red pebbled calfleather with highly decorative borders and vignettes tooled in gilt to boards and decorative title desing sna flourishes gilt tooled to spines. [7], 698; 720; 726 pp. Some light to moderate scuffing and rubbing to leather at board edges; Vol I has a small piece of leather chipped from the crown and Vol III has shallow loss from leather at the tail of the spine. Tissue guarded steel engraved plates throughout, over 80 in total and including extra engraved title pages for each volume. Original coated brown endsheets complete and sound in the joints. All edges gilt. Binder's flaw in Vol III has left a signature including two engraved plates not sewn in on their binding stub; laid in but a little furred where the leaves started from the front edge. Most engraved plates bright and clean, some with mild foxing and a few more heavily foxed. Hand colored, folding map at front of Vol I is clean and generally neat with mild wear to folds. Uncommon in this deluxe trade binding, and thoug a bit rubbed and worn at edges - a generally bright and neat example. VG- thus . Oversize book will require additional charges for most shipping methods.

Gilt tooled lady set into front cover of each volume. All edges gilt. Four bands to each spine. Plenty of b/w illustrated plates through each volume and folding map attached to volume one. No indication of edition, assumed late 1850s. Books are in very good overall condition with sound binding and unmarked content. Name in ink penned to front fly of each volume. Moderate aging through pages. Leather is worn mostly away from corners and notably rubbed around edges and over banding. Volume 1 has 4.5 in. split along rear joint from foot of back strip and worn leather at foot. Bright and beautiful set.
