Together 6 volumes. First Edition of each volume. With nine large fold-out maps, several of which printed with colour highlights. 8vo, publisher's original burgundy cloth, the spines ruled and lettered in gilt, boards with blind-ruled boarders A handsome set, internally the text if fresh and the maps look to be completely unsused, no foxing or spotting to the text-blocks and with just a normal bit to the fore-edges and prelims, the bindings with only light general mellowing, some variation in the colour as is normal due to the availability of cloth over a span of years. VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION SET COMPLETE. AND A HANDSOME SET OF TREVELYAN'S COMPLETE OVERVIEW OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, Trevelyan was born in Rothley Temple, Leicestershire, the only son of Sir Charles Trevelyan, 1st Baronet, and Hannah, daughter of Zachary Macaulay and sister of the historian Lord Macaulay. He was educated at Harrowand Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was President of the Cambridge Union Society, and earned second place in the first class of the Classical Tripos in 1861. Sir George became a British statesman and author and in a ministerial career stretching almost 30 years, he was most notably twice Secretary for Scotland under William Ewart Gladstone and the Earl of Rosebery. He broke with Gladstone over the 1886 Irish Home Rule Bill, but after modifications were made to the bill he re-joined the Liberal Party. Also a writer and historian, Trevelyan wrote The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay, his maternal uncle, in 1876. in 1880 he published The Early History of Charles James Fox. In 1899 he published the first volume of a History of the American Revolution, which was completed in three parts by 1907. His two volumes on George III and Charles Fox published in 1912 and 1914 extended the work on the American Revolution to six volumes as presented here. Trevelyan begins with events that set the stage for the revolt a decade prior to the Declaration of Independence and, unlike most other histortians, includes an extensive account of the political fallout in London of the ongoing problems in America. He provides excellent descriptions of American players such as John Adams, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin but also provides an excellent analysis of European leaders and their foreign policy actions, something typically lacking in American histories of the Revolution. Trevelyan provides an interesting analysis of the political battles between King George the Third and the North ministry on one side - and their Whig opponents lead by Charles Fox on the other; he was clearly in favor of Charles Fox.
