Hardcover. Condición: Good. [2], 280, [2] pages. Frontis Illustration. Decorative front cover. Illustrations. Some weakness at front and back hinges. Some cover wear. Edgar Stanton Maclay (18 April 1863, - 2 November 1919) was an American journalist and historian. He was a reporter on the Brooklyn Times (1886-1890) and on the New York Tribune (1891-1893); served on the editorial staff of the Tribune (1893-1895) and on that of the New York Sun (1895-1896). He was was the author of History of the United States Navy, which occasioned controversy and brought about his dismissal from government employ, by order of President Roosevelt, in 1901. This work includes Articles by: William McKinley, Alfred Thayer Mahan, John Davis Long, William Thomas Samson, Mary Philip Wheelock, David Howard Tribou, Henry B. F. Macfarland, Robert Edward Steele, George Beall Balch, Francis John Higginson, Henry Clay Taylor, Francis Tiffany Bowles, Wilton Merle Smith, Edward Biddle Latch, Marcus H. Rogers, Daniel Delehanty, and Francis J. Haeseler. There have been few officers in the United States navy whose careers have been so nearly ideal as that of John Woodward Philip. His life-long devotion to duty, his conscientious carrying-on of routine in the many weary years of peace-weary at least to sea-warriors-his entire innocence of newspaper press bureaus or politico-social influence, his superb conduct in battle, his modest, sailor-like acknowledgment of the plaudits of his countrymen, and, more than all, his beautiful Christian character have peculiarly endeared him to the American people. As a standard of naval excellence for the emulation of younger officers, the career of Philip is unsurpassed and cannot fail of beneficial results. During the Spanish-American War, his ship led the attack and silenced the fort on Cayo del Toro, Guantanamo Bay, on 15 June 1898. On 3 July 1898, in command of Texas, he participated in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, in which Pascual Cervera y Topete's Spanish Fleet was destroyed off Santiago de Cuba. Hardcover. Condición: Fair. First Edition. London, H.K. Lewis & Co. Ltd., 1918. Octavo, xiv, 260 pages plus 3 two-colour maps and 34 plates. Maroon cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover; covers rubbed and marked, and a little bumped, sunned and bubbled; binding a little shaken; scattered foxing throughout; a decent copy. Loosely inserted is a small mimeographed slip reading 'With the Author's Compliments'. James (later Sir James) Barrett (1862-1945), a leader of the medical profession in Melbourne and an able publicist, was Assistant Director of Medical Services, Australian Forces, in Egypt until August 1915, when he was dismissed due to disorganisation at the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis. He was ordered home in early 1916, but instead managed to have himself transferred to the British army and returned to Egypt with the Royal Army Medical Corps. This book extols the achievements of the AAMC in Egypt, in which he had played a large part, but it is silent on the internal politics of the Medical Corps. Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Andrews, J.; Chandler, J. G.; Cheney, J.; Johnston, D. C. Ilustrador. 1st Edition. (Poe, Edgar Allan) THE PIONEER. A LITERARY AND CRITICAL MAGAZINE. VOL. I -- NO. I, VOL. I -- NO. II AND VOL. I -- NO. III; THREE ISSUES BEING THE MAGAZINE'S COMPLETE RUN. Boston: Leland and Whiting, 1843. FIRST EDITION. Royal 8vo -- 10-1/4" x 7". Original publisher's salmon colored paper wrappers printed in black with a loss along lower edge of front wrapper of Vol. I, No. I, and wear to the wrappers of all three issues for what is still a beautiful, complete set of the magazine. 1-48, [49]-96, [97]-144 pp. This influential, but short lived literary journal, the entire run being published between January and March of 1843, after which the venture ceased for financial reasons, would none the less contain the first printings of works by literary giants, including Elizabeth Barrett [Browning], Nathaniel Hawthorn, Edgar Allan Poe, John Greenleaf Whittier, et al.; Vol. I, No. I contained the first printing of "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe, which is widely considered a classic of the Gothic fiction genre, and one of Poe's most famous short stories; Vol. I, No. II and Vol. I, No. III also both contained first printings of work by Poe, including his poem "Lenore;" all issues illustrated with etchings and/or woodcuts printed in black; internally, all three issues are very clean and bright; housed in a collector's brown cloth chemise and matching slipcase. The condition of the magazines is VERY GOOD. RARE; and quite wonderful to hold and read the important works contained within, just as they were held and read back in 1843 when these works were originally released upon the world!.
