Softcover. Condición: new. In the tradition of Shirley Jacksons We Have Always Lived in the Castle, a darkly humorous modern classic of Scottish literature about a doomed adolescent growing up in the mid-19th century-featuring a new introduction by Maggie OFarrell, award-winning author of Hamnet.Janet lies murdered beneath the castle stairs, attired in her mothers black lace wedding dress, lamented only by her pet jackdawAuthor Elspeth Barker masterfully evokes the harsh climate of Scotland in this atmospheric gothic tale that has been compared to the works of the Bronts, Edgar Allan Poe, and Edward Gorey. Immersed in a world of isolation and loneliness, Barkers ill-fated young heroine Janet turns to literature, nature, and her Aunt Lila, who offers brief flashes of respite in an otherwise foreboding life. People, birds, and beasts move through the background in a tale that is as rich and atmospheric as it is witty and mordant. The familys motto-Moriens sed Invictus (Dying but Unconquered)-is a well-suited epitaph for wild and courageous Janet, whose fierce determination to remain steadfastly herself makes her one of the most unforgettable protagonists in contemporary literature.

Softcover. Condición: new. A sharp and witty collection of autobiographical essays by the late Elspeth Barker-acclaimed journalist and author of the beloved modern classic O Caledonia.Following the publication of her acclaimed, darkly funny novel O Caledonia, Elspeth Barkers sharp and witty essays appeared regularly in the national press. Notes from the Henhouse, a selection of the most personal of these pieces, welcomes readers into the celebrated writers life.Tracing Barkers upbringing from her Scottish roots, these essays beautifully capture her time with the poet George Barker and her profound sense of loss following his death. She writes about Georges former lover Elizabeth Smart and other figures from 1950s bohemia and 1960s counterculture. Pieces like Thoughts in a Garden, equal parts hilarious and moving, read like dispatches from the front lines of country living, depicting the vagaries of raising a large family and assorted pets in a damp and drafty farmhouse.Vivid, charming, and wholly original, Notes from the Henhouse is a wonderful glimpse into the life of an extraordinary writer.

Condición: New. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. The author's celebrated, first - and indeed only - novel which despite attracting acclaim from the critics and winning several prizes, failed to find much of an audience at the time of its release. Re-issued by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 2021, the book is now considered something of a classic of Scottish literature and is currently enjoying international success. Sadly, the author passed away earlier this year. Original burgundy-coloured boards, pp. 151. An attractive, square, tight copy. Pushed at the crown a little, the block is lightly tanned but free from owner names etc. About Fine. The dustjacket is unclipped with price of £14.99. There is minor rubbing to both the spine tips and the corners with accompanying loss of the laminate but not paper. Minor scrape to front panel near the titles but no nicks or tears - a VG dustjacket. Exceptionally scarce, the print-run would have been limited for a first novel but even so the book was eventually remaindered.
