Very good in wrappers with crease to covers and pages, and short, closed tear to foredge of back panel and last page, plus mild wear to spine where disbound. Pages are clean and bright. Complete and original issue of Life. Mrs. Wilson's short article about women and indigestion appears on p. 436. Centerfold reproduction of a painting by William Balfour-ker, "In the Plymouth Woods," shows two pilgrims in the forest with a young Indian child in full head gear and with bow and arrow hiding behind a tree. This issue features a color illustration by C. Allan Gilbert of an elderly gentleman at his table being served by his pretty servant. Article, "Americanus Automobilis" about how the new automobile "simply exhibits a new aspect of the characterisitic American lack of poise, the temperamental defect of control" (p. 423). Elbert Hubbard's two column answer to the question "Are Three American Women Out of Five Disappointed in Their Husbands?" Also, an editorial about Theodore Roosevelt's presidential campaign (p. 424) An interesting piece of turn-of-the-century memorabilia with ads for Milo Cigarettes, Victor Talking Machine, Prudential Rock, the California Limited train, to name only a few, and plenty of cartoons and other illustrations, plus feature stories and poetry.

Boards are bound in red cloth which are clean with NO fraying, and lightly bumped corners. Spine is sunned dark and paper label of title chipped but 90% complete and readable. Binding is firm; interior pages are well attached - no loose or torn pages. End papers are foxed and orignial tissue paper inserts still in place. Previous owner inscription beautifully written and dated January 6, 1907 on FEP. includes B&W photos. This is NOT an Ex-lib; An excellent condition given this book has been in existence for over 117+ years.

Frontispiece, engraved title page, letterpress title page, single plate and numerous illustrations within the text. Sympathetically re-backed in maroon cloth with gilt titles to spine, using original pebbled maroon cloth-covered boards with borders in blind, and pictorial title motif in gilt to upper board. Original printed endpapers retained. Boards lightly soiled, with minor wear at corners. Contents a little toned, with small chip to fore-edge of ffep, frontispiece & title page only. Letters of the alphabet annotated to margin and verso of plate, and numerals to reverse of rfep, otherwise contents clean. A Very Good copy overall. Tips on the smooth running of the Victorian household, including hygiene, cookery, illness, childcare and other aspects of domestic life. Mrs Balfour (1808-78) was a philanthropist and temperance advocate, and a prolific author particularly of scriptural works. The 16 pp., publishers catalogue at end "Catalogue of Illustrated Books Suitable For Presents and Distribution" was printed for the International Exhibition of 1862 and is a delight.
