Publicado por London: J. C. Nimmo and Bain, 1883., 1883
Librería: David Hallinan, Bookseller, Columbus, MS, Estados Unidos de America
Damaged binding. viii, 138 pages. Hardcover: H 25.75cm x L 17.25cm. Boards of full polished brown calf; front board decorated with gilt title lettering and four color parasol and handwarmer (i.e. muff) vignette; staining and rubbing to boards with wear at edges particularly at corners; slender losses along front and rear joints leaving underlying mesh exposed; suspect that spine's surface leather was at one point detached and has been glued down upon the inner backstrip; chipping at spine ends (loss of date at heel) and to the raised bands which delineate abraded gilt tooled compartments; small edge losses at top of spine's maroon morocco title label and at bottom of brown morocco author label; both labels retain bright gilt lettering. All edges gilt. Gilt tooling at boards' inner overlaps with vibrantly colored endpapers in what might be best analogized as a peacock feather pattern. Foxing to interior leaves. Despite aforementioned surface damage along joints the hinges and text block all remain firm. Two-line ink stamp "Bound for J.W. Robinson Company | by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. London" at top left corner of front free endpaper verso; related bookseller ticket/price tag "From the | Books of | J.W. | Robinson Co. | Seventh & Grand | Los Angeles | F84/2649 | $50.00" discreetly affixed at rear free endpaper recto's top left corner. Founded in 1883 (coincidentally the same year the book was published), the upscale Southern California department store chain J.W. Robinson Company opened their flagship downtown Los Angeles store at 7th St. and Grand Ave. in 1915 which, among its many services and amenities, included a prominent bookstore; the Robinson ticket-price tag (and hence the binding) likely dates to 1920s-1930s as Sangorski & Sutcliffe would not have been likely to accept such contract work post-war.

He published many previously unpublished works by authors including Paradis Moncrif, Benserade, Caylus, Besenval, the Marquis de Sade and Baudelaire. He founded the Socià tà des Bibliophiles Contemporaines, of which he was president. His research produced a considerable literary output and frequent publications in newspapers such as L'Echo, Le Plume, Dà pêche de Toulouse, Le Mercure de France, Le Gaulois and Le Figaro of Paris. One of the topics his research focused on was the discussion of fashion and femininity in the French fin-de-sià cle. This took the form of monographs and works including Son Altesse la femme (French for Her Highness Woman), Fà minies and La Française du sià cle (The Frenchwoman of the Century). His own works include novels and fantasy books, such as Surprises du Coeur and Contes pour les bibliophiles (Tales for bibliophiles)." Avril "was a French painter and commercial artist. Under the pseudonym Paul Avril, he was an illustrator of erotic literature. His career saw collaboration with influential people like Octave Uzanne, Henry Spencer Ashbee and Friedrich Karl Forberg." [Wiki] Some fading to the top portion of the binding [no doubt shelved with shorter volumes]. Light shelfwear. Faint evidence of removed bookplate to front paste-down. Still, a handsome VG+ copy. First English edition. Sometime handsomely bound in full burgundy morocco, elaborate gilt borders to sides, both covers with a gilt fan at the centre, spine decorated in gilt and with five raised bands, decorative gilt turn-ins, marbled end papers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Royal 8vo. 7½'' x 5¼''. A study from ancient times into the nineteenth century, Uzanne's work of fans, was part of his wider series of 'books of the boudoir' which was intended to provide a comprehensive history of feminine adornment. His collaboration with the artist Paul Avril creates as Gordon Ray described it 'an elegant pastiche of rococo bookmaking, exactly to the taste of the bibliophiles of his day.' Contains 143 printed pages of text with Avril's designs and decorative borders in a variety of colours to every leaf. Colour bookplate of Bernice Olds Roe. Fine condition book preserved in a cloth dust wrapper with gilt title to the spine. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection. Member of the P.B.F.A. FASHION (Costume & Millinery).
