Dr. Payne earned the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy at the University of Chicago and that of Master of Arts at Columbia University. In 1917 he served as executive secretary of the Military Training Commission in New York. In 1918 he was director of the United States War Department surveys. He pursued advanced studies at Harvard where he was made a Doctor of Education. He went on to teach at Columbia, the College of the City of New York, the University of Minnesota, the University of California, and Harvard. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Signed and Inscribed by the psychologist Jacob S. List to the late actor and musician Theodore Bikel. I purchased this book along with a number of others from the library of Mr. Bikel's ex-wife. His bookplate can be found on the front inside cover. The inscription is on the first front end paper and reads as follows: 'June 3/60, To Theodore Bikel, in memory of a wonderful evening with us, Jacob S. List.' Once listed, this will be the Only Copy copy of this book signed by Dr. List. 'Theodore Bikel studied acting at Britain's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his London stage debut in1948. He was also a widely recognized and recorded folk singer and guitarist. In 1959, he co-founded the Newport Folk Festival and created the role of Captain von Trapp opposite Mary Martin in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music. In 1969, Bikel began acting and singing on stage as Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, a role he performed more often than any other actor to date. He appeared in films including The African Queen, Moulin Rouge), , I Want to Live!, My Fair Lady, and The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. For his portrayal of Sheriff Max Muller in The Defiant Ones, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Bikel was president of the Associated Actors and Artists of America until 2014, and was president of Actors' Equity in the late 1970s and early 1980s. For most of his acting career, he became known for his versatility in playing characters of different nationalities, claiming he took on those different personalities so his acting would "never get stale." On television, he played an Armenian merchant on Ironside, a Polish professor on Charlie's Angels, an American professor on The Paper Chase, a Bulgarian villain on Falcon Crest, a Russian on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and an Italian on Murder, She Wrote. You can see the black covers of the book itself in the photos. They are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The six edges are in very good condition. The four corners each have a speck-sized spot of rubbing. There is a very small cloth tear on the rear side of the spine (see 5th photo). This book is square and straight, and very solidly bound from beginning to end. The pages in the book are in excellent condition. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. They are also very clean. There is, however, foxing/spotting on both the front and rear inside covers and first and last end papers, which includes the signed page (see 2nd photo). There is also this same foxing/spotting on the verso of the glossy frontispiece (a photograph of Jacob S. List) and on the white margins of the frontispiece, and, in reaction, on the margins of the title page facing the frontispiece. And that's it. There is no other foxing/spotting to be found on any other page in the book, none at all in the text. And I didn't see any soiling at all. There are also no markings in the book. The only attachment is Mr. Bikel's bookplate. And with the exception of the signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book. You can see the dust jacket in the photos. It's in very decent condition. It has one tear (5/8ths of an inch) off the bottom edge of the front. There are a few tiny scuffs. And there is some foxing/spotting on the white flaps of the jacket. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. This book appears to propound a somewhat unorthodox approach to psychotherapy. All of the writers were previous patients of Dr. List. They then went on to complete their studies and become therapists themselves. Inscribed by Author(s).

Cloth. Condición: Very good. Signed first edition of L'Invasion Allemande by Général Georges Ernest Boulanger, inscribed to the future Prime Minister of Great Britain, Arthur Balfour. Ilustrador. First Edition. Quarto, 384pp. The first of three volumes. Publisher's original wrappers bound in, with numerous maps and illustrated plates. Red pebbled cloth, title in gilt on spine. Red speckled edges. Solid text block, sunned spine, bumped corners, faint foxing throughout. Endpapers are foxed with light transference. The first volume only, featuring an inscription from Boulanger on the half-title. Inscription reads: "Monsieur Balfour / membre de parlement / cordial souvenir / Gnl Boulanger." General Georges Ernest Jean-Marie Boulanger (1837-1891) was a charismatic leader who rose rapidly in the ranks of the French Army, eventually becoming Minister of War in 1886. The general attracted public admiration for his reformist stance and his tough posture on foreign policy, especially against Germany, with the French citizenry calling him Général Revanche or "General Revenge." The Parliamentary Republic feared a coup by Boulanger and a return to authoritarian rule. However, his political movement collapsed after he fled the country to evade arrest, and his subsequent return to France ended in tragedy when he committed suicide at the grave of his mistress in 1891, marking the abrupt end of his political aspirations. Arthur James Balfour, 1st Earl of Balfour (1848-1930) served as British Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905. He later served as British Foreign Secretary during World War I, where he issued the Balfour Declaration, supporting the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.".
