Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. No date - circa 1944. A presumed later printing of the first edition of this collection [the book is undated, but the list of 'Duckworth's Great Lives' on the back panel of the dustwrapper indicates a publication date sometime shortly after 1943]. Translated from the Russian by Julius West and Marian Fell. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with red titles to the spine. Almost no bumping to the edges of the boards, just a light bump to the top front corner. Boards beautifully clean, unmarked and unfaded, except for just a small patch of fading at the top of the spine where the dustwrapper has been chipped. Spine tight. Titles bright. Internal contents clean and unmarked. No inscriptions. ***In a very good original dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of 7/6 net on the front flap. The dustwrapper is largely complete, but with a chip to the top of the spine which affects the lettering. There is just very light edge wear and small closed tears, and the back panel is lightly foxed. The flaps are clean and uncreased. [please see scans] ***311 pages. 190 mm x 130 mm. ***Introduction by one of the translators Marian Fell, followed by the five plays: The Bear, The Seagull, The Three Sisters, Uncle Vanya and The Cherry Orchard. The translation is shared between Julius West (three stories) and Marian Fell (two stories). ***'This useful volume brings together for the first time in one book the five most popular and enduring Tchekoff plays. The translations used are the established ones by Julius West and Marian Fell, who also supplies an introduction dealing at length with Tchekoff's life and the conditions in which he worked. The collected edition has been chosen by Mr. John Gielgud as "one of my ten favourite books"'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***A presumed later printing of the first edition of this selection. Copies from this period complete in their original, fragile dustwrappers are extremely hard to find now. A collection of five of Chekhov's most famous plays. The book is printed on very thin paper. We also have listed an earlier c.1939 edition of the work which is printed on much thicker pre-war paper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

A presumed first printing of the first edition of this collection [the book is undated, but there is an advert for 'Twelve Modern Plats' by John Hampden, which was published by Duckworth in 1938, on the back panel of the dustwrapper, indicating a publication date sometime shortly after]. Translated from the Russian by Julius West and Marian Fell. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with red titles to the spine. Almost no bumping to the edges of the boards, and the corners are sharp. No tears to the spine. Boards nice and clean, with just a small patch of fading at the top of the front board. Spine tight. Titles bright. Internal contents are clean with just some light off-setting and browning to the first and last couple of pages. No inscriptions, but there is an interesting contemporary label to the bottom of the front free endpaper 'The Punjab Religious Book Society, Branch on the Mall, Anarkali-Lahore'. ***In a very good original dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of 5/- net on the front flap. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just a small chip to the top of the front foldover.
