Social control. 7. Politics and inequality. 8. Religion in society. 9. Globalization and inequality. 10. Untouchability and social class. 11. Caste and modern perspectives. Index. Inequalities previously tolerated now came to be perceived as intolerable because development generates new inequalities and because economies cannot grow as fast as acquisitives desires can be unfettered. Consequently gaps appear between development's promise and its performance. The dense globalization presently occurring creates new desires and new concentrations of wealth and derivatively enlarge gaps between winners and losers. The reason is that market driven globalization unregulated by governance systems and institutions which place economic growth at the service of human needs serves as the vehicle in inauthentic development. Greenfield's study provides rich historically grounded detail on how the dynamism of desire becomes supportive of developmental capitalism and capitalist development now channeled by globalization which serves as a vehicle for unequal development and for the capitalist spirit. 248 pp.

This can be traced even to the very early time. It was the Aryans who laid the foundation of this great characteristic of Indian culture. Since the Aryans all the revolting religious attitudes and views have merged with it to form the composite culture of India. Hinduism has accepted each and every religious faith under its wide wings and this has enhanced its capacity and adaptability and even the Muslims have not been exceptions to it. The process of assimilation has rather strengthened the foundation of Indian culture. 298 pp.

We approach the analysis of the changing patterns of social stratification in India with the help of a selected set of processes. Therefore we have avoided as far as possible analyzing the patterns of changes in the stratification merely with the help of categories such as caste and class or feudalism capitalism and socialism because these refer to system states of stratification rather than its processes. The system states of stratification are abstractions from the processes themselves and reflect reality often through ideological presuppositions that may not only be varied but also contradictory. Moreover in transitional phases of change when stratification system might be passing from one system state to another imposition of system categories of stratification over the processes of change might not only be artificial but may also lead to serious distortions of reality. 268 pp.

Social change and society. 18. Social attitudes. Index. The description of the several problems studied by social psychology should enable us to formulate a tentative definition of the subject. In a broad way it can be realized that this discipline is on the borderland between the two branches of knowledge sociology and psychology. Instead of looking upon it as a branch of psychology some thinkers even go to the extent of looking upon social psychology as a branch of knowledge by itself as a special science by itself. Some look upon it as a discipline that engages itself in the study of those problems of social life which are not adequately studied by either sociology or psychology. Though such extreme position may not give us an accurate picture of the scope and task of social psychology there is no doubt that with the development of this branch of psychology there is a considerable change in our views of what was called human nature. 264 pp.

A sociologist intending to study religious behaviour might construct a questionnaire to gather information for his research. It may contain questions about church attendance individual acts of worship commitment to religious beliefs and so on. He will ask members of the public to fill in the questionnaire and in this way obtain information for his study. Alternatively he may wish to gather data by first hand observation of religious behaviour. Thus he may join congregations in places of worship and directly observe religious services. He may decide however that informal interviews will provide the best method for obtaining the information he requires. He will therefore arrange a series of interviews with members of the public to discuss aspects of their religious beliefs and practices. Questionnaires observation and interviews are three of the main research methods employed by sociologists for gathering data. 260 pp.
