A collection of seventy-two short stories inspired by The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio. Originally intended to contain one hundred stories in ten days, due to the author's death it contains only so far as the second story of the eighth day. The exciting stories contains a series of natural calamities, criminal actions, and miscommunications. Written by Marguerite d'Angoulesme, or Marguerite de Navarre, a Princess of France and Queen of Navarre by her second marriage to King Henry II. As an author and patron of humanists and reformers she was considered an important figure in the French Renaissance. In the original vellum binding. Externally, smart with light chipping to the extremities and discolouration as is typical. Minor loss to the head and tail of the spine to volumes one and two. Joints starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Some of the textblock remains unopened. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Very Good. book.
