Green cloth, gilt lettering on red title label on spine, 12 mo, 276 pp. Early rebinding with the original backstrip laid down, and with the woodcut plate showing deer hunting as a frontis with tissue guard. Lacking the second plate. . Important early account of Texas by A. A. Parker (1791-1893), New Hampshire lawyer and judge and son of a U.S. senator. Parker graduated from the University of Vermont in 1813, was editor of the New Hampshire Statesman in Concord, and "traveled through Texas just prior to the Texas Revolution. He spent a little over a month in Texas, visiting San Augustine, Nacogdoches, Halls Ferry on the Brazos, and Brazoria, among others. He gives particular attention to the land, noting the types of crops that could be grown, and also discusses various animals of Texas, including alligators, panthers, bears, deer, buffalo, and mustangs. In 1836, a new edition of this work was released, in which sections about the Midwest were removed and a 56 page Sketch of the Texian Revolution was added." UTSA. Basic Texas Books 159. "12mo., (7 x 4 4/8 inches). Woodcut frontispiece "Catching Wild Horses" and one woodcut plate "Shooting Deer" (some light scattered spotting). Original green patterned cloth, red morocco lettering piece; green quarter morocco folding case. Provenance: with the ownership inscription of H.B. Moore, Dunstable, Mass, dated June 1908 on the front free endpaper; with the bookplate of Jay Snyder, his sale Christie's New York, 21st June, 2005. First edition, and A FINE ATTRACTIVE COPY. Including " a rather pedestrian account of a sightseeing journey of a little over a month in December, 1834, from the Sabine to the Colorado, then back to San Felipe and Brazoria. In the account are around forty pages with the caption heading, "General View of Texas". The "Brief Sketch of the Texian War " tells the story in popular form to capture Santa Anna at San Jacinto. Parker's entire journey, as outlined on the title page, was to gather information on the regions visited. Even though quite prosaic in style, it has for a little known new country like Texas the interest that is present in any early contemporary account of travels. Parker, a graduate of the University of Vermont in 1813, was a New Hampshire lawyer and judge, and an occasional author. There is a brief account of him in the General Catalogue of the University of Vermont, Burlington, 1901" (Streeter 11172A). Amos Parker journeyed west by way of the Great Lakes to Chicago, then south from St. Louis to Natchez by Mississippi River steamboat. From Natchez he traveled overland to the Colorado River of central Texas. He returned to New Hampshire by steamer from New Orleans.
