A poem written in four cantos, with Johnny Newcome being a general term used to refer to new recruits; in this case, Johnny Newcome is a clergyman's son forced to join the Navy when his father loses all his money. He embarks the HMS Capricorn and prospers under Captain Dale.This issue is founded on the original edition published in 1818.Published under the pseudonym Alfred Burton.Written by John Mitford (1782-1831), a British naval officer and poet best known for this work.Illustrated with sixteen plates by Thomas Rowlandson, including a coloured frontispiece. In a full cloth binding with a paper spine label. Externally generally smart, with a damp stain to the tail of the spine. Ownership inscription and bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have the odd spot, but are otherwise clean. Very Good. book.

Full deep red morocco with gilt rule to boards; 5 raised bands and intricate gilt detailing to spine. Gilt ruled edges; intricate inner dentelles; all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece (with tissue guard) and 15 aquatint hors-texte plates throughout. Includes an advertisement page after title page stating this book would have been released earlier, but "impediments" and the plates delayed its release. There is also included a section for Notes and Errata. Without previous owners' names or other markings. 259 pp., [1]. 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches.
