Brown Cloth Hardback. Condición: Fair-good. Presumed First Edition. 1850. Presumed first edition in two volumes. lix, 340pp.; [ii], 383pp. plus a 4 page catalogue. Preceeded by an essay on the The Genius and Character of the Greek Tragedy, and a brief biography of Aeschylus, this is a collection of the major plays of the great Athenian playwright. The translation from the Greek is by John Stuart Blackie (1809-1895), a Scottish scholar and man of letters. The two volumes are uniformly bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The cases of the books are in fair - good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The corners are lightly bumped with some damage and a little loss to the cloth on the corner tips. The spine ends are bumped with damage and some loss to the cloth at the bottom of the spines and damage with up to about 1/4" missing from the top of the spines. Volume 1 has a small hole in the cloth on the front spine edge and splitting to the cloth down a large part of the rear spine edge. Volume 2 has a split of about 2 1/4" on the top and 1 1/2" at the bottom of the front spine edge with a split of about 1" at the top together with a small hole on the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and the first front free endpaper of volume 1 has been removed. The name G. Gilfillan, Dundee, and date (1851) has been written on the second front free endpaper of volume 1 and the same name and place on the first front free endpaper of volume 2. The name is also written on the rear free endpaper of volume 1. We understand that this refers to Rev. George Gilfillan (1813-1878), a United Presbyterian minister of School Wynd Church, Dundee, 1836-1878, who was also a poet & minor literary figure. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish set so a little extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.
