Spiders are of major importance in agroecosystems and are recognized as effective natural control agents. The Afrotropical Region is particularly richly endowed with spiders, including 71 families and some 893 genera and 5423 species. This book represents the first comprehensive overview of the spider fauna of the Afrotropical Region, and includes an illustrated key to the 71 families. The diagnostic and descriptive characters of each family are listed and illustrated. Keys to subfamilies are provided. The distributions of the 893 genera are summarized. The natural history of each family is reviewed, with particular reference to Afrotropical taxa. Information on the phylogeny and taxonomy of each family is given, including taxonomic literature references relevant to the Afrotropical fauna. A comprehensive bibliography is provided. Pretoria.
