Original o primera edición
Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo. Pp. 48. Frontis. author portrait. Quarter bound in dark red roan and black textured cloth, gilt lettering stamped on the spine. Original stiff printed wraps bound-in. With the "Pacific Northwest History and Literature" bookplate of Clarence B. Bagley on the front pastedown. Publisher announcement leaflet tipped in. Edges rubbed, with loss at head of spine chipped; joints starting. Evidence of another bookplate removed from front free endpaper (perhaps by Bagley) and an old catalog entry for this volume tipped in on front pastedown, which is consistent with other Bagley books we've handled. Clarence Bagley, who as a young child crossed overland in 1852, was a pioneer newspaper publisher in Olympia, W.T., and today is chiefly known for his multi-volume set on The History of Seattle. The prospectus is quite informative, revealing the Woolley's Oakland, California address on Poplar Street (and his phone number!), highlights from the book, the price (50 cents net) and a breathless pitch for his narrative. In fact, Woolley was witness to rich activity in frontier California, including hanging of Casey and Cora, Heatherington and Brace, the actions of the Vigilance Committee of 1856, the Terry and Hopkins affair, and much more, all contained herein. COWAN, p. 695. SOLIDAY IV, 156 states "the book was printed but not for publication," which is contradicted by the prospectus. .
