Pamphlet. A public, official declaration of the LDS church denouncing claims that the church supports the killing of apostates, that the church can supersede or alter the judgement of any civil court, that the church aims to interfere with civil rights, that they harbor illegal immigrants that are LDS, and that the church is hostel towards or wishes to overthrow the U.S. government. They "earnestly appeal to the American Press and people not to condemn the Latter-day Saints unheard" and "ask for the suspension of national and popular judgement until a full investigation can be had" Very good with a few quite subtle smudges on covers. 8vo.

3pp. Bifolium [21.5 cm x 28 cm] Stab holes at left margin, otherwise very good. This 'Official Declaration' (generally called the Manifesto of the Apostles), was drafted by Charles W. Penrose and signed at the foot by the First Presidency and Twelve on December 12. This short work begins by denying that the Church preached blood atonement, and that Church did not interfere with the rights of citizens or in the free exercise of social or political rights. It goes on to note that the endowment ceremony or in any doctrine of the Church was not against the federal government and that they had no intention of overthrowing the United States. Flake/Draper 1410.
