"This Bill of Lading is a partially printed 9 1/2 x 14"" document with portions filled in by hand & 2 handwritten sections in English & French; laid paper with watermark Elias & CO [?]. Signed by the first U.S. Consul (William Willis) to Barcelona (Catalonia), appointed by President John Adams in 1797, & Valentin Riera of Valentin Riera & Co., of Barcelona, & John Boyd, of the ship Harry, & Jean Baptiste Thomas Dannery, French Commissaire de Relations Commerciales & his Secretary (both these signatures may be secretarial). With two stamped seals: U.S.Consul in Barcelona & French Commissaire's seal. Document was originally folded & central cross folds show some darkening, wear & several small holes along the fold lines at cross folds. Framed between 2 panes of glass in a heavy black & silver wood frame. Contents of the document (handwritten parts of the text are shown here in { } brackets). Front, first (partially printed) portion: Shipped by the Grace of God, in good Order and well Condition'd by {Valentin Riera & Co. of Barcelona by order on account, and risk of Messrs. William Bell & John Leamy merchants and residents in the city of Philadelphia---} in and upon the good {Ship} called the {Harry---} whereof is Master, {-----} for this present Voyage, {John Boyd---} and now riding at Anchor in the {Road of Vilanova---} and by God's Grace bound for {Philadelphia.} { W B JL no. 1a 300 Hsd. [=margin mark] Three hundred Hogsheads full of red wine.} being mark'd and number'd as in the Margin, and are to be delivered in the like good Order and well Condition'd, at the aforesaid Port of {Philadelphia---} (the Danger of the Seas only excepted' unto {the Messrs. William Bell, & John Leamy} or to {their} Assigns, he or they paying Freight for the said Goods {Nothing being Owners property---} with Primage and Average accustom'd. In Witness whereof the Master or Purser of the said {Ship---} hath affirm'd to {five} Bills of Lading, all of this Tenor and Date; the one of which Bills being accomplishd, the others to stand void. And so God, send the good Ship to her desir'd Port in Safety. Amen. Dated in {Vilanova 13 Septr. 1800--} {Leakage Excepted} [signed]: Valentin Riera &Co: [signed]: John Boyd. Next follows this entirely handwritten section: Consulate of the United States of America Barcelona. Personally appeared before me in this Consulate Valentin Riera, Principal of the House of Valentin Riera &Co. Merchants of this City, and being duly sworn, Deposed, that the above Bill of Lading, is in every particular, just and true, and that the Articles-therein specify'd, were shipped by his House, soley on Acct: and risque of Wm. Bell, & John Leamy, merchants resident, in Philadelphia, and Citizens of the United States of America, and that the same were purchased with funds, arising from the sales of a cargo, landed at this place, from on board the said Ship Harry, wch cargo was solely the property of the said Wm. Bell, and John Leamy, and the said Valentin Riera further deposeth; that no other person, or persons than the said Wm. Bell and John Leamy, are either directly, or indirectly interested in said Articles, or any part thereof. [signed] Valentin Riera &Co: In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal of Office in Barcelona this thirteenth day of Septemr. One thousand, eight hundred.
